The Great Professional Sporting Tradition in Coventry
The city of Coventry offers many thrilling and diverse sporting options, both professional and amateur. Of course, there is the famous Coventry City Football Club, which remains the pride of the region and the city’s sports anchor. The football club has an illustrious history of more than century and they play in the 32,000 person capacity Ricoh Arena, which also hosts large concert events. But to limit the variety of sports in Coventry to just football would be very wrong, because there are many other successful professional teams, not to mention amateur clubs from nearly every sports game
The Coventry Blaze ice hockey team deserve to be mentioned first, because they are arguably the most successful professional organisation in the city. While the unassuming town of Coventry might not seem like a likely hockey location, their beloved Blaze were crowned the winners of the entire British National League in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007, and they even won the triple crown (taking first in the Elite League, playoffs and Challenge Cup) in 2005. In fact the team has such high calibre talent that many of its players are either former, or future, players in the NHL. The team roughly consists of half Canadian and half British players. Although the Blaze might win the most league championships and gain the most renown, there are many more professional clubs in the region that deserve to be mentioned too.
Everyone from the Bears who play Rugby, to the Crusaders who play Basketball, and even the Coventry Cassidy Jets that play America football, offer a chance for the people of Coventry to cheer on their city and choose from many different leisure events. Clearly Coventry has as many different sporting options as any major city in the UK and can always be seen as a legitimate contender. But what about for those of us who aren’t quite gifted enough to play for Coventry City FC, or simply wish to partake in some leisurely sporting activities ourselves? Here the world class city offers just as many opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation.
The Amazing Selection of Sporting Activities available in Coventry
There are numerous fitness centres located throughout the city that offer a large amount of athletic options. Whether someone is seeking pure weight and fitness training, or tennis lessons, there are many facilities available, including the multiple Coventry and Foleshill Sports and Leisure Centres. Swimming is one of the best ways to keep fit and it remains a premiere service offered to the public at one of these leisure centres. The gym at the Ricoh Arena, associated with the Coventry Building Society, also provides top notch fitness and training facilities.
Another easy and cost efficient way to enjoy sporting activities in Coventry is to visit one of the many well cared for and beautiful city parks. Unfortunately few sports can actually be played inside your home, so it is a good idea exit your house and go into the outdoors. The park makes a great location for jogging, playing football, rugby or really any type of athletic activity out there. In fact, the possibilities are so numerous that we could barely list them. The hardest part is actually in choosing a sport, especially with such a large selection from hockey to boxing to table tennis. Whatever it is you decide to do, you can be sure to find it in Coventry.
